Rutilated & Tourmalated Quartz Beads
Rutilated quartz beads are clear or smoky quartz threaded with fine needle-like crystals of rutile, a titanium oxide mineral, in gold, red or brown. Tourmalated quartz is the same idea with black tourmaline needles instead. This collection holds every needle-included quartz we stock: golden, red and brown rutilated quartz, tourmalated quartz, tourmalated moonstone and rutilated phantom quartz, in a range of finishes and shapes for bracelets, necklaces and earrings.
Appearance
Golden rutilated quartz holds bright metallic gold needles, sometimes as a few long hairs and sometimes as a dense tangle. Red rutilated quartz carries copper to blood red needles, and brown rutilated quartz is smoky quartz with darker needles and a warmer body. Tourmalated quartz is clear to milky quartz with jet black rods and splinters, and tourmalated moonstone shows the same black needles in a white feldspar ground. Phantom quartz adds ghost outlines of earlier crystal faces inside the bead. Beads vary from almost clear to nearly filled, so no 2 strands match.
A polished finish shows the needles floating at full depth; faceting adds sparkle around them and suits the clearer beads. A matte finish frosts the surface and hides much of the interior. Quartz is 7 on the Mohs scale and the needles are sealed inside, so the beads wear well in daily bracelets. Tourmalated moonstone is feldspar at 6 to 6.5 and should be kept apart from harder beads.
Formation and origin
Rutilated quartz grew in hydrothermal veins and pegmatites where titanium-rich fluids crystallized rutile needles first and quartz then grew around them, trapping them in place. Rutile color depends on its iron content: low iron gives gold, more gives red and brown. Tourmalated quartz formed the same way with needles of schorl, the black iron tourmaline. Phantoms record a pause in growth when a thin coating of another mineral dusted the crystal faces before quartz resumed. Brazil supplies most rutilated and tourmalated quartz, with further material from Madagascar and India.
Pairings
Prehnite beads: a pale apple green with its own dark epidote needle inclusions, a natural match for tourmalated quartz.
Larvikite beads: silver-grey flash that picks up the black needles and frames gold rutile.
Chevron amethyst beads: purple and white banding beside clear quartz with gold needles, and both are 7 on the Mohs scale.
Lore and Meaning
Rutilated quartz has long been called Venus hair stone and angel hair, and in crystal traditions it is associated with amplified intention, clarity and forward motion, often placed with the solar plexus chakra. Tourmalated quartz is said to combine the clearing lore of quartz with the grounding lore of black tourmaline and is linked with the root chakra. These are traditional beliefs, not claims of physical effect.
