Mother of Pearl Beads
Mother of pearl beads are cut from nacre, the iridescent inner lining that mollusks build inside their shells, the same material a pearl is made of. This collection holds every shell bead we stock: mother of pearl in white and beige, white tridacna clam shell, pink queen conch shell and dark coconut shell, in a range of finishes and shapes for bracelets, necklaces and earrings.
Appearance
Nacre is white to cream with a shifting rainbow sheen that moves as the bead turns, stronger on some beads than on others. Strands run from beige and brown-toned to an even, silvery white.
A polished finish gives nacre its best iridescence; a carved or matte surface shows the layered structure and a quieter glow. Nacre is 2.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale, soft and layered, and it is organic: acids, perfume, hairspray and sweat dull the surface, and dry heat can crack it. Put shell jewelry on last, wipe it after wearing, and keep it apart from hard stones.
Formation and origin
Nacre is built by the mollusk from microscopic plates of aragonite, a form of calcium carbonate, stacked in layers and bound with a thin protein cement, and the rainbow sheen comes from light interfering between those layers rather than from any pigment. Mother of pearl for beads comes mainly from pearl oysters and freshwater mussels farmed in the Indo-Pacific.
Pairings
Hematite beads: gunmetal spacers against white shell, a very common bracelet combination that gives the soft shell a harder frame.
Crazy lace agate beads: cream, pink and red swirls echo the tones of nacre and conch; agate is harder, so use spacers.
Pink opal beads: a matte pink next to pink conch or white nacre, two gentle stones with similar care needs.
Meaning and Metaphysical Beliefs
Mother of pearl has long been associated with the sea and with motherhood. It has been carried as a protective charm by sailors and used in rosaries, sword hilts and inlay in many cultures. In modern crystal traditions it is linked with nurturing, calm and intuition, and it is sometimes placed with the heart or crown chakra. These are traditional beliefs, not claims of physical effect.
