Rose Quartz Beads
Rose quartz beads are pink quartz, colored not by a dissolved impurity but by microscopic mineral fibers scattered through the crystal, which also make the stone slightly hazy rather than clear. Madagascar and Brazil supply nearly all of it. Appearance
The pink runs from a faint blush to a deep rose, and most of it is translucent and softly cloudy rather than transparent. Madagascar rose quartz tends to be the deeper, more saturated pink; Brazilian material is often paler. Strands vary in depth of color and in clarity, and pale strands look pinker on their stringing cord than off it, which each product notes where it applies. Some beads carry white veils or small fractures, both normal for the stone.
Faceting gives rose quartz sparkle and makes a pale strand look brighter; a smooth polish shows the soft glow; a matte finish turns it to a frosted, sugar-like pink. Rose quartz can fade with years of direct sunlight, so store it out of the sun. At 7 on the Mohs scale it suits everyday wear.
Formation and origin
Rose quartz forms in pegmatites, coarse-grained granite bodies where large masses of quartz crystallized from the last watery fraction of a cooling magma, and it is found as bulk material rather than as pointed crystals. Its color comes from microscopic fibers of a pink dumortierite-like mineral embedded in the quartz, which is why the color is usually even and slightly cloudy; long exposure to strong sunlight can slowly pale the color. Rare transparent pink quartz, colored by aluminum and phosphorus, is a separate variety. Madagascar and Brazil are the main sources, with smaller deposits in South Dakota, Namibia and India.

Rose quartz meaning has long centered on love. In Greek myth it was said to carry the blood of Aphrodite and Adonis, and Romans and Assyrians carved it into beads and seals. In modern crystal traditions it is the stone of unconditional love, compassion and self-acceptance, and it is the stone most often placed with the heart chakra.
