Chalcedony Beads

Chalcedony beads are cut from quartz whose crystals are too small to see, which gives the stone a waxy, translucent look rather than the glassy clarity of rock crystal. The family includes gray chalcedony, carnelian, chrysoprase, bloodstone and onyx. Appearance

Gray chalcedony is the plainest member: a soft blue-gray to smoke color that looks lighter in small beads and darker in large ones, because more stone sits in the path of light. Carnelian adds orange to deep red, chrysoprase an apple green colored by nickel, and bloodstone a dark green flecked with red. Translucency varies from bead to bead, and faceted cuts catch that inner glow best.

Formation and origin

Chalcedony forms when silica-rich water seeps through cavities in volcanic or sedimentary rock and slowly deposits quartz in fibers too fine to see. Iron oxides give carnelian its orange and red, nickel gives chrysoprase its green, and gray chalcedony carries almost no coloring minerals at all. Banded chalcedony is called agate, and opaque chalcedony stained by clay or iron is called jasper. Major sources include Brazil, India and Madagascar, Australia for chrysoprase, and Namibia and Turkey for blue and gray material.

Angelite beads: the same soft blue-gray in a lighter tone, though angelite is far softer and needs more care.

Labradorite beads: a gray base with blue flash echoes gray chalcedony while adding movement to a strand.

Sardonyx beads: banded red-brown and white chalcedony, the same mineral with a bolder pattern.

Meaning and Metaphysical Beliefs

Chalcedony has long been carved into seals, cameos and beads, from Mesopotamia through Rome, and it is said to have been worn by orators. In modern crystal traditions it is associated with calm, goodwill and open communication, and blue and gray chalcedony is linked with the throat chakra. These are traditional beliefs, not claims of physical effect.
