Agate Beads
Agate beads are banded chalcedony, a fine-grained quartz that forms in layers, and no two strands carry the same pattern. This collection holds every agate we stock: lace agates in blue, white, red and crazy-lace swirls, moss and tree agates with green inclusions, carnelian, sardonyx, dendritic, botswana and Tibetan dzi agates, in a range of finishes and shapes for bracelets, necklaces and earrings.
Appearance
Most agate shows bands, from the fine concentric rings of botswana agate to the wild loops of crazy lace agate, in whites, greys, browns, oranges and blues. Moss, tree and dendritic agates are the exception: their chalcedony is clear to milky, and the green or black markings inside are mineral growths, not plants. Carnelian is agate colored orange to red by iron, and sardonyx is agate banded in reddish brown and white.
Formation and origin
Agate forms when silica-rich water seeps into cavities in volcanic rock and deposits chalcedony one thin layer at a time, following the shape of the cavity. The bands record changes in the water as the cavity filled. Moss and dendritic patterns form when iron or manganese oxides crystallize inside the chalcedony. Brazil, Uruguay and India supply most commercial agate; blue lace agate comes mainly from Namibia, botswana agate from Botswana, Laguna lace from Mexico, and dendritic agate from Montana and India.
Pairings
Rose quartz beads: soft pink beside the greys and whites of lace agate reads gentle and clean.
Black onyx beads: onyx is agate's close cousin, and solid black sharpens any banded pattern next to it.
Amazonite beads: blue-green that pairs with moss agate and brings out the blue in blue lace.
Meaning and Metaphysical Beliefs
Agate meaning in traditional belief centers on stability and balance, and it has been carved into seals and amulets since ancient Mesopotamia. In modern crystal traditions, blue lace agate is linked with calm and clear speech and the throat chakra, moss agate with growth and the natural world, and carnelian with vitality and confidence. These are traditional beliefs, not claims of physical effect.
