Before becoming a stone, Mookite was a deep oceanic bottom-mud made up of skeletal fragments from marine microorganisms. Over millions of years and with sea-level change the siliceous ooze was cemented together forming Mookaite. The word Mookaite originated from the Aborigines, and means 'running water', referring to the Mooka Creek where it formed.
