Ruby, a variety of the mineral corundum, forms deep within the Earth under immense heat and pressure. This intense environment causes aluminum and oxygen atoms to bond together, creating the crystal structure of corundum. The presence of trace amounts of chromium within the crystal lattice imparts the ruby's distinctive red color, ranging from pinkish to deep crimson hues.
