Before becoming a stone, Mookaite was a deep oceanic bottom-mud made up of skeletal fragments from marine microorganisms. Over millions of years and with sea-level change the siliceous ooze was cemented together forming Mookaite. The word Mookaite originated from the Aborigines, and means 'running water', referring to the Mooka Creek where it formed.

In metaphysical belief, mookaite is associated with personal power and a connection to the timeless spirit. It is also linked with the third-eye, solar plexus, and root chakras and with intuition about oneself and one's surroundings.
