Bloodstone is a form of Chalcedony and is considered the most beautiful of the Jaspers.
Bloodstone was well known by the Aztecs during the 13th century and was used in ceremonial rituals, where the blood of a doner would activate the stone and then be under its control. Once the blood drips or is washed off of the stone, the person would then be freed from its power.
Even today in India, vividly colored bloodstone is crushed into powder and used as medicine and an aphrodisiac. The powder is mixed with egg whites and honey and is then applied to the skin. This use removes much of the finer quality bloodstone from the market making high quality bloodstone a rare find.
