The pattern sits in the surface layer of the stone, and its sharpness varies from bead to bead; strands often mix slightly different versions of the same design.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA matte finish is the traditional look and makes the pattern read as part of the stone; a polished finish gives the agate a glassy depth with the pattern just below the surface. The pattern is applied by treatment, as it has been for centuries, and the colored varieties use dye in the same way. At 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, agate wears well, and the pattern is permanent under normal wear, though harsh abrasives can dull it over time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eFormation and origin\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe stone itself is agate, banded chalcedony that formed in cavities in volcanic rock from silica-rich groundwater. The patterns are not natural. Traditional dzi making, known from ancient beads found in Tibet, Nepal and the Indus valley, drew the design on the agate in an alkaline paste and then heated the bead so the surface bleached white where the paste lay, or darkened the base and left the design pale. Modern dzi beads are made mostly in China and Tibet by the same principle.
