Oolite is the name given to a stone composed of ooids. What are ooids you might ask?Ooids are carbonate spheres that form from concentric layering of calcium carbonate around a central nucleus (typically a sand grain). Ooids are found in tropical shallow water seafloor environments. They are used by geologists to help understand depositional environments when preforming stratigraphy studies.
If you look closely at the beads you may also find the occasional crinoid stem disk. Crinoids were filter feeding fern-like plant, often referred to as a sea lilies. They date back as far as 500 million years ago.
