Carnelian agate gemstone beads are beautiful, and they carry a rich history. Carnelian agate has been found on every continent and were popular gemstones in ancient times.
The word "carnelian” comes from the Latin word for "flesh" and has been used for amulets and talismans since prehistory. Carnelian was also used to make signet rings for imprinting wax document seals during the Bronze Age.
In the ancient world, carnelian stone was often used as a burial gem, because it was thought to speed up the journey to the afterlife. We see a similar theme in China, during the Ming Dynasty, where carnelian was buried with deceased emperors to protect them in their journey to the afterlife.
Carnelian was also very popular stone during the Art Deco period due to its vibrant red/orange color.
