Agatized fossil coral has been replaced by chalcedony and sits at 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, hard enough for daily bracelets. Orthoceras is still limestone, around 3 to 4 on the Mohs scale, so it scratches easily and should be kept dry and away from acids, perfume and harder beads.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eFormation and origin\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFossil coral formed when reefs that lived 20 to 300 million years ago were buried and their calcium carbonate skeletons were slowly replaced by silica from groundwater, preserving the polyp structure in chalcedony. The best known source is Indonesia, with similar material from Florida and Morocco. Orthoceras was a straight-shelled relative of the squid that lived around 400 million years ago; its shells are found in black Devonian limestone in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, where they are cut and polished with the rock around them.
